Dr. Nir Shalev, DPhil (Oxon), FHEA

Doctor Nir Shalev is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Gerontology and a fellow at the Institute of Information Processing and Decision Making (IIPDM). Nir completed his doctoral training in neuropsychology at the University of Oxford, where he researched attentional problems in stroke patients. He then pursued post-doctoral training at the Oxford Centre of Human Brain Activity, studying the temporal dynamics of cognition. Afterward, he was appointed as a Lecturer in Experimental Psychology at Oxford. His current work primarily focuses on age-related changes in attention and cognitive control, as well as the functional impact of attention difficulties in aging and neurodegenerative diseases.

Research Interests:

  • Investigating changes in the ability to control attention throughout the lifespan.
  • Examining the relationship between everyday behaviors and difficulties with age-related changes in high-order cognition, such as inhibitory control and attention.
  • Understanding how prediction-led proactive cognitive control contributes to age and cognitive well-being.
  • Improving neuropsychological assessment methods to provide a more detailed and comprehensive understanding of cognitive decline and its neural substrates.
  • Identifying factors that contribute to cognitive reserve and improved cognition among older adults.
